Who is eligible for PMAY?

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme was launched with the intention of providing affordable housing to the weaker sections of the society, urban poor, rural poor, and the lower-income group people. It involves the agenda of constructing around 20 million houses at an affordable price by March 31, 2022. 

PMAY has certain eligibility criteria, and they are as described below: 

  1. PMAY is given to families, consisting of husband, wife and unmarried children.
  2. The family should not possess a pucca house in any of the family members name or in any part of India.
  3. An adult earning member irrespective of his marital status can be treated as a separate household in the Middle Income Group category.
  4. Households who have an annual income up to Rs. 18 lakh may apply for the PMAY scheme. Even the spouse's annual income could be included while opting for this scheme.
  5. Beneficiaries can't enjoy the PMAY benefits on the house that's already built.
  6. Those families who've availed some central assistance under any housing schemes from the Government of India/State Government can't avail this scheme.
  7. As per Census 2011, the rightful towns and towns notified subsequently are eligible for coverage under this mission.
  8. Ground floor housing is given preference for the senior citizens and differently-abled.
  9. In cases where the applicant is married, either both together in joint ownership or on the spouses can get a single subsidy.
  10. The loan that has been availed for construction/extension should be completed within 36 months from the date of the payment of the 1st instalment of the loan amount.
